I think this is the film where Terry Gilliam really found himself as a director. Time Bandits was great, but a little uneven. There are less of his trademark stunning visuals here, which he more than made up for in his next film, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Although we often read plays in book form, they were originally written to be performed, and are more akin to screenplays than novels. Should movies based on plays (for example, Shakespeare's Tempest) be included in this list?
